What To Wear For Your Photo Session (without everyone matching)

The most common question I get before a session is "what should we wear?" And honestly, the answer is always a little bit of "it depends." It depends on your style, where we're shooting, and even the time of year. But I promise it doesn't have to be complicated. I'm not a fan of the everyone-in-beige look, and you don't need to be a stylist to look great in your photos. Here are a few simple ideas to help you feel like the best version of yourselves.
START WITH ONE ANCHOR OUTFIT
Instead of trying to make everyone match, pick one outfit first and build from there. I usually suggest starting with whoever has the hardest time finding something they love. Once that piece is chosen, everyone else just needs to land in the same color family. No one has to match exactly, and that's the whole point!
BUILD A PALETTE OF THREE OR FOUR COLORS
Think of it like a little color story. Pick three or four shades that look good together and mix light, medium and dark tones so the photos have some depth. When everyone wears the same shade, people tend to blend together, and when the tones are too far apart, it can feel chaotic. A little variety in the same family is the sweet spot. And if you're not sure where to start, denim is your friend. It goes with almost everything and always feels relaxed
TEXTURE AND MOVEMENT
This is my favorite part. Fabrics that move make photos feel alive, especially if we're going for laughter and spinning and walking around. Flowy dresses, skirts that twirl, linen shirts, chunky knits and soft cardigans all photograph beautifully and add dimension without needing anything fancy. For maternity, stretchy fitted dresses or flowy gowns both work great, depending on the vibe you want.
WHAT TO AVOID
Big logos and graphic tees tend to pull attention away from faces. Very busy patterns, neon colors and anything shiny can also feel distracting in photos. And the most important one: skip anything you don't feel like yourself in. If you're tugging at your outfit all session, it shows. Comfort always shows up in the pictures.
THINK ABOUT WERE WE ARE SHOOTING
If we're at the beach, lighter and softer tones tend to look beautiful, and shoes are optional. For a park or hills, earthy tones blend in nicely with the scenery. At home, you have more freedom to play with your favorite everyday pieces. And since I love shooting in that golden light before sunset, warm colors look especially glowing at that time of day.
STILL NOT SURE?
Once everyone has picked their outfit, do a little mirror check. Put the whole look together, shoes and all, and look at yourself in the mirror.
Do you like what you see? Then you're ready!
If something feels off, take a moment to figure out what doesn't make sense. Maybe the color is fighting with someone else's, or the fit isn't comfortable, or it just doesn't feel like you. Swap that one piece and check again.
And if you still have doubts, send me your options! You can text me photos of what you're thinking, and I'm always happy to help you put it together. That's what I'm here for.
