Booked a photoshoot and suddenly stuck on choosing the best location? Totally normal! Whether it’s a family session, maternity shoot, wedding, or lifestyle photography, picking the right spot can feel overwhelming. As a Bay Area photographer, I help clients make this decision all the time, and here are some easy, real-life tips to make it simpler.

  1. Your home, yes, seriously!
Even if you feel unsure or think “my house isn’t pretty enough,” trust me: the magic isn’t in the decor, it’s in the emotions, the connections, and the everyday moments that make your story uniquely yours.

  • You feel completely comfortable: Being in your own space helps you relax.
  • Natural, honest images: Your environment helps me capture genuine moments, from laughter to quiet connections.
  • Everyday details matter: Tiny touches, nursery items, favorite chairs, or meaningful objects, add depth and personality to your photos.
  • Everything is ready: No need to pack or travel; the session happens where your life already unfolds.

Whether it’s family memories, a maternity glow, newborn moments, or lifestyle portraits, your home is a beautiful, authentic location that brings warmth and intimacy to your images.

  1. Your favorite spot
If you prefer shooting outside but want something personal and meaningful, choose a location that already holds significance for you. When your location has meaning, whether it’s a park you visit every weekend, a favorite walking trail, or a spot that marks a special memory, it adds depth and personality to your images.

In the Bay Area, we’re lucky to have countless beautiful parks, gardens, and urban spots that work perfectly for photography. Whether it’s family, maternity, engagement, or lifestyle sessions, picking a place you love makes the experience more relaxed and the photos more authentic.
If you want a beautiful sunset, an iconic Bay Area view, or just feel like exploring, here are some of my favorite locations:

  1. Elizabeth Gamble Garden (Palo Alto)
I love this garden for Bay Area family photos. The space is beautiful, safe, calm, and kids usually go wild exploring all the flowers and paths. It can even be a fun little adventure if it’s your first time there.

  1. Arizona Garden (Stanford)
The tones here are just… unique. The cactus garden isn’t huge, so I usually recommend it for shorter sessions. But the textures and light are incredible, perfect if you want something different from the typical green park.

  1. Pulgas Water Temple
Pulgas Water Temple is perfect for photography with an elegant, timeless, and dramatic style. Its classical architecture, symmetry, and reflective pools create a serene, almost ethereal backdrop that enhances sophisticated, artistic, and editorial images.

  1. Arastradero Preserve (Palo Alto / Portola Valley side)
Golden grass, rolling hills, and that true Bay Area nature feel. It’s perfect for sunset family photos, but be prepared: lots of ups and downs on the trails. If your family loves being outdoors, this is a dream location.

  1. Beach Sessions
If you love the beach, the Bay Area offers some truly stunning spots that are perfect for photos. Baker Beach is a favorite for its iconic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, wide open sand, and beautiful light. It’s relaxed and spacious, giving plenty of room for playful, candid moments. A little sand on your shoes or splashing in the waves only adds to the fun and natural feel of the photos.

Half Moon Bay offers a different vibe: wide, serene beaches where kids can explore, run, and play freely. The soft light and open space make it ideal for capturing authentic, joyful moments that feel like real memories.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the best location for photos is about more than just a pretty backdrop. It’s about how the space makes you feel, the emotions it inspires, and the memories it helps you create. Whether it’s the comfort of your own home, a favorite park, a serene beach, or an iconic Bay Area landmark, the best locations are the ones that reflect your story and allow your personality, connection, and joy to shine through.

The right spot sets the tone, guides the light, and opens the door to authentic, timeless photographs you’ll treasure forever.
